Step 3.5: Understanding Locked vs. Unlocked Keys
Essential Concept for Beginners
Before you start programming keys, you need to understand the difference between locked and unlocked JLR keys. This is crucial for troubleshooting and fixing remote button issues.
Locked Keys
Keys with security encryption enabled. They cannot be:
- Read for key data extraction
- Copied to create duplicates
- Used for RF remote sync
- Modified or reprogrammed
Unlocked Keys
Keys with full access enabled. They can be:
- Read for complete key data
- Copied via OBD or adapters
- Synced for RF remote buttons
- Programmed to vehicles
Critical: Don't Unlock Keys First!
When remote buttons stop working, many beginners jump straight to unlocking keys with HW04. This is wrong and dangerous! Unlocking erases all key data.
Always follow this troubleshooting order instead:
- 1. Try RF Remote Sync on Lock50 HW04 reader (if key is already unlocked)
- 2. Use BCM Rolling Code Sync via OBD (safe, doesn't erase data)
- 3. Only unlock keys if you have Package C+ and steps 1-2 failed
